  • “I knew rotten tomatoes was semi fraudulent when they gave Interstellar a 73% while allowing movies like Toy Story 2, Honeyland, Seven Samurai and Pinnochio (amongst many others) into the 100 percent club. Laughable stuff. They just don’t know ball the way we know ball over here at T and T”.

  • "The forgiveness scene between Cooper and Murph might be the most emotionally overwhelming moment I've ever witnessed in cinema. Its simplicity paired with the sci-fi grandeur is why Interstellar is in my top 10 of all time."

  • "I continue to be baffled that Interstellar didn't take home Best Visual Effects - the space imagery and physics-defying scenes make Gravity look like child's play."

  1. The Dark Knight – When the menace known as the Joker wreaks havoc and chaos on the people of Gotham, Batman must accept one of the greatest psychological and physical tests of his ability to fight injustice – Bat & Clown

    Release Year - 2008

    Time - 2h 32m

    Rating - PG13

Streaming - Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO Max, YouTube, Google Play

    Genre - Action / Thriller

    Director - Christopher Nolan

Cast - Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gyllenhaal

Intro

“A superhero movie in your top ten of all time? Such an amateur move”. What my drunk friend (who consistently produces substanceless opinions) failed to comprehend is that this isn't just any superhero movie, this is the best superhero movie of all time, and it’s not close. The most iconic protagonist and the most infamous villain: Christian Bale and Heath Ledger put on an absolute show in an instant classic rivalry matchup of Batman vs The Joker. Police Lieutenant James Gordon and DA Havey Dent form an alliance to dismantle organized crime in Gotham City but the anarchist mastermind throws Gotham into disarray and forces Batman ever closer to crossing the line between hero and vigilante. Will Gotham fall to the Joker-facilitated chaos, or can Batman diffuse the mounting pandemonium? Chris Nolan’s most captivating work of art will have you locked in from the first second to the last.

Expert Quotes

  • “Not only is this the best superhero movie of all time but it’s also the best Chris Nolan movie of all time. By that metric, yeah I’d say it has to be top 5 ever” - Player X

  • “The Dark Knight is just one of those movies that’s fucking sick the entire time. All gas no breaks type shit. If you’re not completely dialed in to The Dark Knight during your first watch, you shouldn’t be allowed to watch any movie ever again. This spectacle had me feeling like I was in Gotham. I was completely and totally immersed”.

  • “The plot is there. The action’s there. Actors are there. The profundity of the situation is there. From the comic book history of The Batman to a Chris Nolan cinematographic masterpiece, the Dark Knight just has that little boy from Rosario feel to it. On behalf of every little boy wearing his shirt… The Batman on a million backs.”

  • “Personally it’s my favorite trilogy of all time, and it’s definitely the best part of the trilogy. Does that make it my favorite movie of all time via transitive property, I don’t know, but it is certainly up there with the best of them”

  • “I mean, I thought the rest of the movie had to be a bit of a letdown after witnessing the best intro scene of all time. The Joker bank robbery has to be in the history books as the universal top dog in terms of sick villain intros, but the rest of the movie absolutely did not disappoint… think Lebron somehow out performing his near impossible career expectations as a high schooler”.

Why 2nd?

The Dark Knight is ranked just below Interstellar with a score of 9.5, celebrated for redefining the superhero genre. Nolan's vision brings a dark, gritty realism to Gotham City, anchored by Heath Ledger's legendary performance as the Joker – a performance so legendary that it ended up costing him his life; Heath Ledger's intense commitment to his role as the Joker in The Dark Knight, while showcasing the profound impact of method acting on performance, tragically highlighted the potential detriments of this immersive technique, as it has been widely speculated that the psychological toll of this nefarious role contributed to his untimely death. The film delves into themes of chaos, morality, and the fine line between heroism and vigilantism. Christian Bale's portrayal of Batman and the film's intricate plot elevate it beyond a typical action movie, making it a profound exploration of good and evil. The meticulous direction, powerful performances, and thought-provoking narrative ensure The Dark Knight remains a pinnacle of modern filmmaking.

The gritty and psychologically complex take on the Batman franchise raises the bar for superhero films in this thrilling tale of the Caped Crusader's battle against his most iconic nemesis, the Joker. The film's exploration of the thin line between hero and villain, order and chaos, and the dark side of human nature elevates it far beyond the realm of traditional comic book adaptations, making it a true cinematic classic. The Dark Knight comes in a very close second on this list, thanks to its impeccable craftsmanship, iconic performances, and thought-provoking themes. While it may lack the grand scale and emotional resonance of Interstellar, The Dark Knight remains a landmark achievement in the superhero genre and a testament to Nolan's skill as a filmmaker.

Inception is a masterful blend of action and cerebral storytelling, solidifying its place as one of Nolan's most innovative works. Inception takes the third spot on this list for its sheer originality, visual inventiveness, and narrative complexity. Although Inception dazzles with its originality and cerebral storytelling, it ranks slightly below The Dark Knight and Interstellar due to its less emotional, albeit highly intellectual, engagement. While it may not have the emotional depth of Interstellar or the cultural impact of The Dark Knight, Inception showcases Nolan's ability to push the boundaries of mainstream cinema and create intellectually stimulating blockbusters. Compared to the grand scale of Interstellar or the grounded heroics of The Dark Knight, Inception stands out for its mind-bending concept, intricate world-building, and exploration of the nature of reality and the power of ideas.

The film emerges a confounding magic act about the art and sacrifice of pulling off illusions leaving you caught in simmering feud's moral gray.

Expert Quotes

  • Nolan's 'The Prestige' is a labyrinthine narrative of obsession, with twists and turns that captivate and challenge the audience in equal measure. The GOAT director spins a mystifying tale doubling as a metaphorical portrait of creative rivalry's perils. The cinematic puzzle is a brilliant exploration of the thin line between dedication and obsession.

  • " Jackman and Bale both deliver a multifaceted performance, portraying the charm and the hidden torment of a magician consumed by rivalry. Specifically, Bale AKA Alfred Borden’s role is a testament to his ability to inhabit deeply layered characters, driving the film’s tense and mysterious atmosphere."

  • In the Prestige, each scene is a piece of a larger, intricate mystery. The performances of Jackman and Bale are intense and captivating, embodying the relentless pursuit of perfection and the high cost it demands. Compared to the psychological complexity of The Dark Knight or the mind-bending thrills of Inception, The Prestige stands out for its period drama intrigue, exploration of the blurred lines between illusion and reality, and the tragic consequences of unchecked rivalry. Its focus on personal vendettas and the dark side of human ambition sets it apart as a haunting and thought-provoking piece. A unique aspect of The Prestige is its connection to Nikola Tesla's work on renewable energy and teleportation; the story of Tesla's quest for limitless energy and teleportation mirrors speculative theories like the Giza Power Plant theory, which suggests that ancient civilizations may have harnessed similar advanced technologies for renewable energy and other purposes. While it lacks the grand scale of Interstellar and the genre-defining impact of The Dark Knight, The Prestige excels in its psychological depth, moral ambiguity, and the fascinating interplay between science and magic, making it a thought-provoking and elite entry in Nolan's filmography.

Tenet showcases Nolan's signature blend of mind-bending concepts and visual spectacle, making it a compelling, if sometimes confounding, addition to his body of work. While it may not have the emotional resonance of films like Interstellar or The Dark Knight, Tenet stands out for its bold storytelling and innovative approach to the sci-fi genre. Its complexity and ambitious narrative structure highlight Nolan's continuous push to challenge and expand the boundaries of modern cinema. The film's exploration of reverse entropy and temporal inversion pushes the boundaries of what is possible in mainstream cinema, and its stunning action sequences are a testament to Nolan's skill as a director. Compared to some of Nolan’s other films, Tenet can feel like a more cerebral and confounding experience, with its complex plot and exposition-heavy dialogue sometimes overwhelming the human drama at its core. It’s almost too ambitious for its own good, as many viewers remain confused even after the second watch.

Why 10th?

Dunkirk shares an 8.3 rating, recognized for its intense, immersive portrayal of the WWII evacuation of Dunkirk. Nolan's meticulous direction and use of practical effects create a visceral experience, capturing the harrowing reality of war from multiple perspectives—land, sea, and air. The film's non-linear narrative structure and minimal dialogue heighten the tension, relying on visual storytelling and Hans Zimmer's relentless score to convey the urgency and desperation of the situation. While it differs from Nolan's typical character-driven narratives, Dunkirk stands out for its technical mastery and emotional impact, solidifying its place as a powerful war film. The film's triptych structure, which interweaves three different storylines, creates a sense of urgency and tension that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats. Compared to the mind-bending thrills of Inception or the psychological depth of Memento, Dunkirk is a more straightforward experience, but one that still bears Nolan's signature touch in its attention to detail and visual storytelling. Dunkirk remains a stunning achievement in war cinema and a testament to Nolan's versatility as a filmmaker. The film is great for what it is, but because of its simplistic nature compared to the complexity of the GOAT’s other movies, its potential is only so high.

Comprehensive list here MT. I agree with the placements of most if not all of Nolan's anthology here. I am still yet to completely view his works, missing Tenet, Following, and Insomnia. Personally, Interstellar sparked my journey of superior media consumption. Prior to my first watch, I scrolled social media, watched social media, and read with no curiosity. While a naturally curious individual, I was failing to interact with what I consumed; the modern consumer epidemic. With infinite media at our fingertips, consuming no longer has intrinsic value. It is how we interact with our consumptions that lay the foundation to deeper thought.
